First for garden records are always welcome, particularly as this is now my seventh summer season of trapping. Pride of place of course to Lime Hawkmoth just because of its looks... but two other new species and a couple of other species not recorded since my first June in 2010 were good to get.
Also new and generally more common was a Small Dotted Buff and a Small Phoenix. This followed on from two others new at the start of the month, Orange Footman and Small Yellow Wave. Also illustrated a very smart Oak Nycteoline, very much better than the normal fairly plain ones I get.
Thankfully numbers and variety picked up in the last few days of the month. Unfortunately, other than one Dark Sword-grass, a few Diamond-backed Moths and a procession of Silver Y, I did not record any of the migrants that are currently winging their way around the country. Only one new macro for me, a Tawny Shears.
None of them rare in county but presumably so in my area. Also illustrated others that were of interest to me.
Even Common Quaker and Hebrew Character were counted on one hand on all but a couple of nights when it was suitable to actually put the trap out.
Only decent moth in the month was Tawny Pinion which appeared on 14th and 16th as second and third garden records and look to be different individuals. Also an early Pebble Prominent on 21st.
Micros recorded included a Diamond-backed Moth on 14th and an Esperia sulphurella that I managed to pose for a photo in the sunshine on 18th.
Otherwise pretty slow with cold nights and infrequent trapping; been working through micro photos though so a good update and first publish of the list from last year soon, and no doubt the odd one appearing on this blog, including my first notable of the year below.
Started 2015 with a pale Dotted Border, then the next two moths were the same species, one much darker and one in between...so three individuals of a species I did not get in 2013 of 2014, now just waiting more variety.

Before the earlier species go, I thought I'd catch up with a couple of photos from second and third weeks of the month.
I had a Point of my own as well with this garden first; seems to have been a good year for them with records I am aware of also from Biggleswade and Sandy.
White-point, a first for the garden on 30th August

Also trapped over the last week, a few decent brown jobs among the three-figure counts of Large Yellow Underwings including the first proper autumn moths: Centre-barred Sallow and Feathered Gothic
Still managed a new one, and a wetland species at that, which are generally few and far between in my garden given the lack of suitable water within the vicinity.
A pug that was worn and I could not recognise from 22nd June turned out to be a Sloe Pug and the suspected Small Clouded Brindle from 2nd June (previously illustrated on blog) has been confirmed. Beating these however is this large beauty found on the walls of my short term residence, a villa in Turkey, last week.
Indulging in some images, I trust a least a couple are actually helpful in recognising difficult species.

Wormwood - new for garden 26th July. Nice to get after mates had been showing off theirs in the pub the week before !
Southern Wainscot - new for garden 26th July 2014. Initially recognised as different from the pinky-brown colouration and the suggestion of a curved line of dots across the forewing. I am now informed also that the dark and pale lines across the front of the thorax are also a distinctive feature, and this is illustrated in the picture below.

Southern Wainscot from below also looks much cleaner than Smoky, just lightly dustedand has the pointed wing shape

Least Yellow Underwing - anticipated as a new for the garden for a long time, finally arrived on 25th July

Small Scallop - separated from Riband Wave by the wing shape, though this dark individual looks very like that species n colouration, second garden record
A presumed Hoary Footman was trapped on 16th July and examined by the recorders and confirmed a couple of days later as a male of that species. While they had it in a pot, a second almost identical individual was caught on 17th. Having confirmed the identity of the first, I was not so worried about the potential second getting away so I could get some better photos and allow it back into the "wild". Three new for garden macros in a night with the Plain Pug and the Brown-tail.
A nice start to the month with the first warm night for a while, a Newbie and a trap full of monsters. Here's looking forward to a few more over the next couple of weeks...
