Some June variety

Though it seems so sometimes, the second half of the month has not been only about common and sometimes difficult brown noctuids. The number of the "gentler" moths has however been relatively disappointing in the last couple of weeks. Here are some pics tough of some that have caught my attention including a New for Garden species that was always on the possibles list.

 Shark - get a couple of these most years

 Shears - been a good year for these in my garden

 Miller - always a favourite

Common Swift - scarce for me, just a few each year

A bit of warmth and the nightly macro species count immediately jumps from the teens up to the thirties or more, also bringing in two new for garden moths, neither unexpected but still need to be collected for the list all the same...

Shaded Broad-bar - New for garden on 22/7, these are easily disturbed from the grass in the daytime on nearby hillsides like Sharpenhoe Clappers so I was waiting for one to turn up. Two were trapped on 24th.

Small Fan-foot Wave - new for garden on 24/7

Dark Umber - a local species but regular at Wychwood Moths, two on 22nd and four for year so far

Dingy Shears - 24/7, previously recorded only once with two on 3rd July 2011

Small Emerald - another local species that has turned up each year, fifth record 22/7

Burnished Brass - I do like these, a nice change from the brown stuff

13th July update

A selection of moths attracted to the trap in the last week, most of which I expected for this time of year. Two new for the garden though included one that should not be around until maybe October, adding to the list of other early appearing species that have occurred locally this year.

Juniper Carpet -new for garden 10th July. Three months early perhaps but gendet checked as male by the recorders.

Small Scallop - new for garden 10th July

Silver Y - a few of these now appearing by day and by night, I have not attracted any of the related Golden species yet

Single-dotted Wave - nine in the last two weeks

Broad-barred White - new for year 10th July

Small Emerald - new for year 5th July, also in early July last year

Small Blood-vein - new for year 4th July, I have had at least three separate individuals this week

Phoenix - new for year 12th July, five records in 2010

Burnished Brass - new for year 5th July. A very smart looking moth, all of my garden records have been of this form - juncta
