Go Figure... into July

July is the month of the greatest diversity of macro moth species in my garden, though that figure may be partly affected by the number of weeks of August I have been away since I started the trap. A nice start to the month with the first warm night for a while, a Newbie and a trap full of monsters. Here's looking forward to a few more over the next couple of weeks...

 Figure of Eighty - new for garden 2nd July

 Deckboard of Hawkmoths - 2nd July - still not had Lime here

Shaded Pug - one of a handful in the last half of June

 Bordered Pug - another one that is easier to identify

 Shoulder-striped Wainscot - into double figures on these this year

Peppered Moth of form insularia (or close)

Good spell continues

With hot dry days and warm dry nights, mothing continues to be good for all and my own personal garden list moves along smoothly though the 250 barrier at last.

 Ghost Moth, female - NFG 19th July began laying eggs during the photo session

 Purple Bar - NFG 17th July had seen better days

 Marbled White Spot - previously recorded here only on 22nd June 2010 so a good "year tick"

 Beautiful Golden Y - 2nd for Garden after first on 18th June this year

Short-cloaked Moth - 3rd record for garden, previously one each in July 2010 and July 2011

Beautiful Hook-tip - first garden record since July 2010

Start July - six new for garden in three days

Lots of excitement at Wychwood Avenue over the first few days of the month with a hot spell and six new macro moth species for the garden. Four are illustrated here and the other two (much scarcer) species to come in a later post as they are currently with the VC30 recorders for confirmation. Haworths Pug (on the scratched perspex cove of the trap) - NFG 4th July

Treble-bar - NFG 3rd July (have found on local hills in daytime earlier this year)

Common White Wave - NFG 4th July (though plenty around the local woodlands)

Dingy Shears - pair together NFG 3rd July

Scalloped Oak - NFY 3rd July, three were recorded in 2010

Short-cloaked Moth on the shed door - NFY 3rd July, just one record in 2010

Fern - second one this year, this is fresh and well marked in contrast to the previous one

Marbled Beauty - very common around these parts but not usually with this amount of orange colouration

Common Emerald - NFY 2nd July, four of these in the garden in 2010
